Each of the initial set of 24 is modelled after a character in League of Legends, adapting their playstyle to fit inside the rules of a card game. It keeps Legends of Runeterra feeling unpredictable and dynamic, instead of one player snowballing due to bad luck. ![]() Being able to play cards on a turn where it should be impossible to play them because I stored mana earlier is one obvious benefit, but I also like that I’m not as harshly punished by a bad opening hand. This one change feels as substantial as The Elder Scrolls: Legends having two separate playing boards. In Legends of Runeterra, however, up to three points of my unspent mana are preserved for the next round to be used exclusively on spells. Most card games, for example, punish me for not spending all your mana in a given turn. Some genius twists to combat further distinguish Runeterra from the pack. Not having double-check your math or worry that a certain chain of abilities and spells plays will play out a certain way is a godsend. The logo functions just as well in 2D, appearing in different colors or with a metallic sheen.When interactions between cards get complicated, Runeterra has a clever feature called the Oracle’s Eye that shows you what the board will look like after a certain attack phase or spell has resolved. The three-dimensional rendered version of the LoR logo features gold texture and dramatic lighting inspired by the artwork of the game. Below, a baseline echoes the frame-like motif on the LoR playing cards. Inspired by the graphic crests of the LoL factions, these lines glow with light in the animated version of the logo.Īt the top of the logo, “Legends of” appears in more streamlined type that anticipates the updated League of Legends identity next designed by Pentagram. Within each letter, the Pentagram team illustrated intricate, filigree-like linework to represent the different regions of Runeterra. The logo puts “Runeterra” front and center in customized typography (modified from the font LHF Factory). The identity echoes the imaginative visual style of the game, while also being simple enough to work in a wide variety of applications. The challenge for the designers was creating a logo that looks like it hails from the world and period of LoL but is different enough to give LoR its own profile. The Pentagram team traveled to Riot Games HQ in Los Angeles to try their hand at LoR before developing the identity and were able to incorporate graphic details from the game into the logo. The characters in the game hail from different regions of Runeterra, and players build a team of champions from the deck and begin to create their own legends. Legends of Runeterra brings the champions, creatures and regions of its namesake land to a completely new game, deepening the experience of Runeterra as its own distinct world.
